Time and time again, you discover that it isn’t the subject matter that makes a class good or bad, it’s the professor.
In high school, I hated history, but I loved Ms. Pullen’s history classes. Same thing with Intro World History here with Donna Harsch. In high school, I loved chemistry, but hated Mr. Petkus’ chem class. Here, I hate physics, but I loved my experimental physics class.
This semester, I was looking forward to numerical methods… the subject matter seemed interesting and everything. Now that I’ve been to two classes, I can’t help but feel disappointed. I mean, so maybe it’s just the beginning of the class and it’s too early to judge, and maybe she hasn’t taught the class before, so whatever. I just know I’m disappointed thus far.
Likewise, I was dreading my analysis class, but now that I’m in it, I’m loving it. The professor is amazing and whee! Also, the section I switched into (because the professor asked people to, if possible) has something like 10 people in it. Amazing!
But yeah, today’s alt. photo class was amazing. We shot 4 X 5 film, and took polaroids to test the exposure metering and such. 4 X 5 cameras are a pain to use though… I don’t know how fond I am of them.

Less than three, OMG
I love alt photography
Polaroids they shot of me
LOLOL

So I’ve now been to every class. Yesterday, I was registered for 70 units (equivalent of 23.3 credit hours; more than the allowable) due to my being admitted into photo history from the waitlist. I intended to drop alternative photo processes for it. However, I went to the class, and there’s only 7 people in it, and it seems amazing… so I decided to drop photo history instead. I’ll take it next semester or something. I also switched sections of analysis (21-355) because the professor asked people to if possible. Relatedly, if anyone’s interested in my now finalized schedule, see here (the class script that tells you where I am in my day has also been updated).
Thoughts on classes…
Alternative photo processes (62-265) is amazing… definetly worth getting up at 7:30 for. It’s a shame that Emily (my photo professor last semester) left CMU (to sail tall ships in California), because she would have co-taught this class. That said, I’m really excited about this. We’re doing 3 different types of printing (none standard) and experimenting with different photo techniques and materials and camera formats. Should be amazingly fun, and the $100 lab fee (which includes all supplies) is amazingly low. Oh yeah, and the teacher seems really good too. Yay!
Numerical methods (21-369) seems like a good course. I’ll need to learn Matlab for it and such, but meh… no big deal. The first day of class was review for me… things about how computers handle floats and rounding/truncation errors and such. Doesn’t seem like it’ll be too much work.
Principles of real analysis I (21-355) is dooooom. The professor seems really good and really nice though… I emailed him saying my book hadn’t arrived yet (the only one that hasn’t, and it’s ironically the only one I need right now), and he said he’d photocopy the necessary stuff for me until it does. Amazing. The material itself seems like it’ll be difficult but not undoable… definetly one of my more difficult classes this semester.
Computer graphics (15-462) also seems good… however, I am very afraid of the fact that it will require massive amounts of matrix/linear algebra (the fact that it’s all in C++ doesn’t concern me) given that I don’t remember anything from matrix. Meh. I should recall it fairly fast though. The class seems like it’ll be a ton of work (my most work-intensive class this semester), but it also seems like one of my most fun. Yay for openGL!
Algorithm design and analysis (15-451) looks like it’ll be excellent. The Blums are teaching it (Manuel and his son), so I mean, you can’t really go wrong. This is probably my hardest class this semester, especially given there’s no collaboration on the written homeworks, but that’s actually good, because it means I’ll really truly learn the material. The oral homeworks are funny (collaborate with two others, then present your answers to the TAs/professors), but seem like a very good idea. First day was easy… he went over the different multiplication algorithms, leading us from the naive O(2^n) method to the traditional O(n^2) method to the better O(n^(log_2^3)). Nothing I haven’t seen before, but nice to see again.
Color photography and digital output (15-381) seems exactly like what I expected… not very much Photoshop work (just basic touching up) and a ton of focus on the taking of the photographs… using lighting and time to change hues and tones in the picture. Excellent. The professor seems really good too. Whee!
So yeah, that’s it classwise. I dunno… I kinda feel like I haven’t gotten as much out of the past 2 years as I should have. I don’t remember half the things I learned (although they do tend to come back fairly quickly when I need them, with only a little bit of review), and I don’t feel like I’ll be adequitely prepared for a job after I graduate. I mean, I guess that’s somewhat crap, because I did fine this summer when thrown into a problem that I had never seen before, but still. I dunno.
Last night was lots of fun. Played some ITG with Greg, then pulled him over to Fairfax to look at the place. Then we got caught up in watching Whose Line with everyone else, and then we all played Loaded Questions. Was fun, but it was probably a relatively bad idea since I didn’t get to bed until around 2. Was worth it though… yay for all living by each other! And yay for Mars’ yummy chocolate cupcakes!
Played Student Wars with Ben today. He’s pointing out things that could potentially break the game, and is going to try to build a deck that does so. I’m revising the rules to compensate. Whee. If you’re interested, swccg.alanv.org.
Ben tortures his alarm clock with his variac… whee

So yeah, I have homework, but I can’t do it until my analysis book comes, so meh. I guess in the meantime I’ll enjoy my “homework free” evening and work on Student Wars before going to bed (early; 8:30 class tomorrow).
Wow, I am overwhelmed by all the foo having to do with coming back and moving in. I’m ready for classes to start so I have less to do :-P
I’m more or less moved in. Already filled a suitcase with junk that I’m bringing home over Christmas. Have some more old textbooks I’ll probably take too.
Have not yet seen everyone I wanted to, nor done enough stuff with people, but meh… what can you do? There’s only so many hours in a day.
Yesterday I played ITG with Ben, then went Waterfronting with him, then went back to his apartment to play Student Wars. ’twas fun. Wheee. I also moved stuff in and around and everything.
Today was spent playing ITG and moving in more stuff. Also went to Alisa’s place to take pictures of her kitten. She’s so cute!! Ahhhh! Then was a floor meeting and foo. I feel sorry for Apphia and Mars… they are currently in the process of moving stuff from storage (they rented a UHaul for today), and the weather is crap… it’s been drizzling on and off all day, and it was pouring the last time I went outside. Meh. That’s Pittsburgh for you.
Had horrible bus luck these two days. Yesterday Ben and I waited like 30 minutes for a 64A to Waterfront, and then about 30 minutes for a bus back. Today I waited 50 minutes for a bus to Alisa’s. Meh.
Ben with his coil gun… OF DOOM!

Keith with the best OS book ever… it has dinosaurs! Using computers and iPod-like music player things!

Someone should get pictars of me playing ITG. I want pictars of me playing ITG. Wheee!
Meh. Yeah so, I haven’t slept for the past ~32 hours (I tried really hard last night). The extent of my food intake has been the meal my mom packed for me, some snacks, and a salad at lunch today. Mrr. This is probably a bad thing.
So first off I want to apologise to anyone who I’ve ignored, blown off, shrugged off, confused, or otherwise made feel unimportant in the past day (in particular Everett, Ben, and Grant). Things have been extremely chaotic, and I have literally been doing stuff since 7 AM this morning on no sleep. There’s just so many of you I want to see and so many things that I want to/had planned to do when I got back, and my brain is kinda overloading right now. The fact that I’m trying to do everything at once (ITG! Moving! ITG! Chat!) doesn’t help matters.
I also discovered that playing a set of 10-rating ITG songs on no sleep is a terrible idea. This should come as no surprise.
Um… so we moved in today (as in got all our stuff), and moving in sucks. Getting our boxes out of Hamerschlag storage was surprisingly easy. Getting them into Keith’s car (OMG it’s a lifesaver) was also easy. Getting the car into and out of the Fairfax alleyway to get the boxes up to the room was hard. Very hard. At one point Keith had his car stuck and wouldn’t be able to move at all until something freed up space. Meh.
Then we helped Ian get his boxes. Blah.
Our room still has way too much furniture in it, and the bathroom still hasn’t been cleaned. I really want to shower tonight… I really need to shower tonight. Grargh.
All my clothes are still at Alisa’s place. Must get them tonight still. Grargh.
I really think that, next year, I am going to hire someone to take the boxes away and bring them back. The cost is more than worth not having to go through this again. *sigh* I really don’t know what I would have done if it wasn’t for Keith and his car to help me move and carry boxes.
Oh look, it’s only 6 PM.
Another 6 hours before I can finally collapse into sleep. Another 600 things to do before then…
Dinner. Get boxes at Alisa’s place. Waterfront for supplies. Geagle for food. Unpacking necessary stuff. Showering. Foobar. Sleep
Gaah.
*runs off*
I have pictures, but I really don’t have the time or the energy to post them.
Edit: 12:30, and still not done with everything. Gaaah.
Here’s a picture, at least (the built-in memory card reader on this thing is so fast!!! <3)
This is the main room (the sleeping/working area) with the excess furniture and all our boxes. Bathroom/huge walk-in closet to the right and kitchen to the left.
